Optical Encoders

Cole offers both optical and rotary encoders, engineered and manufactured to meet or exceed the strictest standards. The optical encoders are available in standard or high resolution with quadrature 2-bit code and an optional pushbutton. Based on the half-inch enclosed rotary switch, the rotary encoder is available with hexidecimal, BCD, octal, reflected or any custom code specified by the customer.

1800 Series – Encoded

The COLE 1800 series encoded switches anticipate both high-rel use, and the essentially dry circuit conditions of extremely low current switching.

Cole’s series of one-half inch encoded switches for direct logic level interfacing derive from the MIL-S-3786, MIL-S-22710, SERIES 1800 rotary selector switches, and feature the same mechanical quality as that series. The hexadecimal switch is also available in BCD, Octal, and Reflected Gray code notation, standard. Custom user codes are available on request.

Unlike other switches being introduced, the COLE 1800 series encoded switches anticipate both high-rel use, and the essentially dry circuit conditions of extremely low current switching; they offer 25,000 minimum life cycle and gold contacts – not found on most comparable units.

The switch is available in 221/2, 30, 36 and 45 degree indexing, with or without adjustable stops.

Quality construction, including materials that meet the strictest standards, allows these subminiature switches to combine high current switching capacity with constant low contact resistance. Long life and high reliability are assured by exceedingly stringent inspection and testing procedures.

This advanced optical technology uses no mechanical contacts, reducing noise and eliminating contact bounce. Optical Encoders are more reliable and longer lasting than conventional rotary switches.

All of our rotary encoders use a quadrature output that is the same as a 2-bit repeating gray code. Quadrature 2-bit code is a relative or incremental code form wherein the direction and magnitude of the optical encoder can be determined, but absolute positioning cannot. In most applications this is not a problem.

In a quadrature rotary optical encoder two detectors are used to provide output “A” and “B”. The code rotor either blocks the infrared light or allows it to pass to the detectors. As the shaft turns the rotor, the output changes state to indicate position. The resulting output is two square waves that are 90° out of phase.

External pull-up resistors from each output to the power source are needed when interfacing with an open collector output to provide the output with the high state voltage when the photo transistor is “off”. Base current is supplied in a photo transistor when light strikes the detector effectively grounding the output. This “on” or “off” digital arrangement allows the open collector to interface with commonly used integrated circuit technologies such as TTL, TTL LS, CMOS and HCMOS.
